From previous experience, this requires a good community and communication with the people visiting the site. Actually I don’t think it is only about visiting, but about being part of it, because when you upload your own free e-commerce template you become part of it, you become part of a community. This is one of the best ways to do it, because in time, the level of work that the administrator of the site will have to put into maintaining the website will be smaller and smaller since people will contribute and upload their own templates so the site content will become user generated. We must realize, after all, we live in a world where the internet is user generated, isn’t it?
Just that designing an ecommerce web template is not such an easy task that anybody can do it in a few minutes. It requires knowledge of web design, knowledge about the particular online commerce engine such as Zen Cart or CRE Loaded or OsCommerce, and this requires a particular level of skills that are not available to anybody.
However, if I think about the spreading of WordPress themes around the internet, we must agree that the idea of going open source with our ecommerce templates works and we could attract designers to upload their work here.
