Go with an already developed ecommerce website engine

One of the things we get asked everyday is if when building an online store, a company/customer should start building a custom software package with a specialized software company or buy a predefined package. While I do run a software company that can build such software, I always suggest my customers to go with a predefined package. The reason is simple: the company that already sold the software to many customers has tested the software more than enough so in most of the cases the majority of bugs has been removed and fixed.
If you start an online store engine from scratch, first of all you need to go through design stage, and I don’t speak about web design, about designing an ecommerce template, but about designing the structure of the ecommerce engine, then through development, then through testing and installing and removing extra bugs observed in this last phase of using the application.
When purchasing an already developed application you save all these and get a software package that is ready to run without bugs. The fact is that there is no need to pay for them, you always find solutions that are free or open source, like osCommerce, Zen Cart or CRE Loaded and for these you always find templates. You know that we offer osCommerce templates, Zen Cart templates and CRE Loaded templates, so you can easily find skins to dress your site. The advantage of a paid engine is in most of the cases the support you get, the fact that you can call a support team and ask for help while with an open source engine you can not do.
That is the reason for which I always advise my customers to not start the development of their own engine for ecommerce websites, unless they are very big and really need a custom solution. In this case, we speak about a different thing, because probably eBay or Amazon couldn’t be started now on a free solution, they are far too advanced and powerful and you would need your own custom solution for them. But, for most ecommerce websites, an open source engine that also is backed up by ecommerce website templates is the best choice!
Think about how much you want to invest, and I am not only speaking about money but also about time, patience and work and the go with an already developed ecommerce website engine. It will save you money and ecommerce is al about money, right? And also remember to always go with some agile developers, not with anyone.
