You can not just join a community and expect that only being part of it, to gain a reputation. There is a common belief that social media will work wonders for your site but this is not true by itself. The factor that gives value to social media is you, the user, the social person. You are the one that powers Digg, the one that powers StumbleUpon or any other social media site.
Just being part of it does not guarantee success, in order to reach high peaks you need to make friends, to make contacts, you need to have friends, you need to help them and help their businesses. It works this way, you help me I help you!
Speak to your online friends, make contacts, chat with them by mail, by instant messengers, etc. At that moment people will help you grow your business. At that moment you will not be just part of a group, you will become, in my case, the buddy that sells ecommerce templates. Good thing, you make friends, people will know you, like you, help you! These days my visitors looked more and more for osCommerce templates, but I am somehow surprised by people looking for Zen Cart templates, because I am on the second page in Google for that search, Zen Cart templates, but I still receive visitors for that.
This tells me that people need such theme and they really look for them on the internet, along with tutorials, articles and other similar items.
My target is to become one of the first sites in Google for Zen Cart web templates andfor osCommerce templates and for ecommerce themes also, because this way I can be sure that more and more people will find me and that I will provide design options for more and more people. Also I plan to expand my collection of free webdesigns for ecommerce because I only provide a few, but this is going to change in the near future.

Free OsCommerce templates requires a certain degree of knowledge
And that is the cold truth, my friends, designing a free osCommerce template requires a specific set of knowledge and I tell you this from my own experience. It is not easy to design a skin for a well structured engine, no matter it is osCommerce, Zen Cart or WordPress, they all requires you as a designer, developer or whatever you want to call yourself know your job very well.
Why is an osCommerce template difficult to design?
The reason is quite simple: there is not easy to consider all the features such a powerful engine has. It is easy to draw and design a skin, no problem here, ok? Every website designer is able to do it, but then the real problem comes, the fact that you need to break that design into HTML and integrate the PHP calls and this is also a tricky thing to do.
Also you need to know your script languages, PHP is not a difficult language, if you know your way around it, but it is not easy of you don’t. May sound obvious but think about the fact that a simple call to a PHP function there may bring a lot of code you did not expect, like for example tables, grids, lot of products with one simple call of a function and you need to also design and customize that call and here you need to know your way in PHP a bit to know where to find your stuff.
That is the reason for which I say that designing free osCommerce web templates is not an easy to do task and you need to learn a bit of programming, HTML, PHP before jumping into it.

I was thinking of writing an article about CRE Loaded templates and about how to not give yourself on the hands of somebody who doesn’t know his job, somebody who will design a CRE template on his knees. OK then, I have thought, how many people around you can you possibly know to be able to design such themes? Personally I only know a few and I am in this business, OK?
Probably what you are going to do if you want to design a CRE Loaded template is to search for it on the internet. There you can find enough people willing and able to design one for you. A great advantage for people on the internet is, in my opinion, the fact that they can easily share their portfolio of works without too much trouble. It is easy to do it for offline people too, but they need to show you a paper folder with works or something like this, or go to a few websites they have designed, etc. When you find their site on the internet, they will probably have some portfolio or past clients page that you can easily look at before even contacting them. This is one great advantage of online presence.

I think that the best way to do it is to start with the default theme and then to adapt that one. This way you will have the constraints already respected, the theme will already be adapted for the engine and it would be easier for you to add some design parts around the already embedded tags.
An other interesting solution would be to take an open source osCommerce theme and to change that one. The Open Source license will allow you to adapt it as long as you probably keep the link back to the original designer. Then,one step at the time, try to design your own themes and templates and you will see that you will manage to come up with nice looking skins for your osCommerce, Zen Cart or CRE Loaded ecommerce websites.
Build your confidence, trust, customers will come and money also
One of the problems a popular website will need to face is spam. People spam a lot on the internet and I don’t quite understand why, from my point of view it doesn’t make sense, but hey, if they do it, probably they do it for a reason. And what’s the best reason than money?!
Most of the sites that spam are related to a shady area of ecommerce, adult products. While I am not going to speak about this here, I wanted to make you aware that spam is not the way to go. I am not speaking here from a legal point of view, but from a long term relationship point of view. The best way to make your ecommerce site is to build a relationship with your customers and to make them grow with you, to make them understand why you bring vaue to them and why they should continue the relationship with you and with your site.
When somebody spams, it is a total different approach, people hide, don’t want to decline their identity, because it is illegal, but also because they probably have different sites and don’t want their image be associated to spaming. This is true, believe me, there are people spaming for some sites while maintaining good ones, clean and with a strong name.
That is why I say that the best way is to just build up your trust, your name with your customers and in time money will follow.
